Geostatic & Remote sensing: field-campaign assignment “Land surface classification”

What is it?

The Geostatic & Remote sensing course is led by the Geoscience & Enginering, and Geoscience & Remote Sensing departments at TU Delft. As part of the general Applied Earth Sciences program, the Bachelor 2nd year are part of a field excursion trip in France, coordinated by Dr. Roderik Lindenbergh & Dr. J.C. (Jan Kees) Blom in France, Le Vercors region. There are 2 key goals during this field-campaign: a geology goal (geology excursion, analyses of the geological formation, etc…), and a remote sensing goal.

What has been my role?

As assistant in Geostatic & Remote sensing, I co-designed the field-campaign assignment “Land surface classification based on LandSat (7 & 8), and Sentinel-2 surface reflectance and collocated GPS measurements of reference land cover classes”. I supervised ~80-100 students during 10 days of field campaign (each year in May-June from 2014 to 2017) in Le Vercors, France.

This required:

  • some technical supports on the use of SIG software (i.e. QGIS) and the understanding of satellite land surface data (LandSat), elaboration of a reference land surface classification methodology, being critical on reference GPS smart-phone waypoints etc…
  • some organization supports: student team motivation, comments / feedback, stimulating new ideas during field-excursions
  • students evaluation during the field: status reporting, assessment of student team progress, mid-term meetings
  • students evaluation back in Delft: intermediary and final reports grading, feedback reporting to students for the future
